MY BODY, MY CHOICE
The My Body, My Choice programme was successfully conducted on 25 July
2025 at Kafeteria UTC Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, through a collaborative effort between
Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN) and Goon
International College. This programme was organized as part of the institution’s
commitment towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives that focus on
student development, health awareness, and social responsibility.
In today’s rapidly changing society, young adults are constantly exposed to
information from multiple sources, particularly concerning health, relationships, and
lifestyle choices. However, not all information available is accurate or beneficial. Because of this, there is a growing need for structured educational programmes that
provide students with proper guidance and reliable knowledge. The My Body, My
Choice programme was designed specifically to address these concerns by
educating students on personal health awareness, responsible decision making, and
the importance of respecting personal boundaries. This programme was not only educational in nature but also served as an
important platform for encouraging open discussions among students regarding
issues that are often considered sensitive. Through this initiative, both LPPKN and
Goon International College aimed to create a safe learning environment where
students could gain knowledge, ask questions freely, and become more aware of the
responsibilities associated with their personal well being. Youth development plays a significant role in shaping future society. As
students transition into adulthood, they begin making decisions independently
regarding their health, lifestyle, relationships, and overall well-being. Unfortunately, many young people lack access to accurate educational resources that can help
them make informed decisions, particularly in matters related to reproductive health
and healthy living. Recognizing this gap, the My Body, My Choice programme was introduced as
an awareness initiative aimed at providing students with knowledge that can
positively influence their choices and behavior. The programme emphasized the
importance of understanding one’s body, making responsible life decisions, and
maintaining physical as well as emotional well-being. The collaboration between LPPKN and Goon International College
strengthened the programme by combining institutional support with professional
expertise. LPPKN, as a government agency specializing in family development and
population health, brought valuable knowledge and experience, while the college
played an important role in ensuring active student participation and smooth
programme coordination. This initiative also reflects the institution’s commitment to
preparing students not only academically, but also personally, by equipping them with
life skills that contribute to responsible adulthood and healthier communities. The primary objective of this programme was to increase awareness among
students regarding health-related issues and encourage responsible personal
choices. More specifically, the programme aimed to educate students about
reproductive health, healthy lifestyle practices, and the importance of making
informed decisions in situations that may affect their well-being. Another important objective was to encourage respect for personal
boundaries and individual rights. In modern society, students are increasingly
exposed to peer pressure, social influence, and situations that may challenge their
values. Therefore, helping students understand the importance of consent, self-
respect, and personal responsibility was a major focus of the programme. Additionally, the programme aimed to strengthen collaboration between
educational institutions and public agencies such as LPPKN, demonstrating how
partnerships can create more impactful educational initiatives that benefit students
directly. Ultimately, the programme sought to empower students with practical
knowledge that they can apply in their everyday lives, allowing them to make better
choices for their future. The programme was conducted from 8.00 a.m. until 5.00 p.m., involving a full
day of educational sessions, awareness talks, and interactive discussions led by
representatives from LPPKN. A total of 50 students participated in the programme, exceeding initial expectations and reflecting strong student interest in health
awareness initiatives. The implementation of the programme followed a structured format designed
to maximize student engagement. Throughout the day, facilitators delivered
presentations focusing on reproductive health awareness, responsible behavior, healthy lifestyle practices, and decision-making skills. What made the programme particularly effective was its interactive learning
approach. Rather than relying solely on lectures, facilitators encouraged active
participation through open discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and real-life
scenario analysis. This allowed students to engage directly with the content and
relate the information to situations they may encounter personally. The positive response from participants showed that students were highly
interested in learning about issues that directly affect their personal development. The strong level of engagement also demonstrated that such programmes are highly
relevant and necessary in today’s educational environment. As the collaborating institution, Goon International College played an
essential role in ensuring the successful implementation of the programme. The
college was responsible for coordinating student participation, managing
communication between students and organizers, and providing logistical support
throughout the programme. One major responsibility of the college was ensuring students understood the
purpose and significance of the programme prior to attendance. This helped create
stronger participation and encouraged students to approach the sessions with
seriousness and interest. The programme was also aligned with the college’s broader student
development initiatives. Beyond academic achievement, the institution recognizes
the importance of equipping students with life skills that prepare them for real-world
challenges. By supporting this programme, the college reinforced its commitment
toward holistic student development. Following the programme, the college also planned several follow-up efforts
to sustain the impact of the initiative. Students were encouraged to share knowledge with peers, practice healthy lifestyle habits, and remain actively involved in future
awareness programmes organized by external agencies. This demonstrates that the
college views student development as an ongoing process rather than a one-time
event. Several activities were conducted throughout the programme to ensure that
learning remained engaging, informative, and interactive. The main activities included
awareness talks delivered by LPPKN representatives, educational sharing sessions
on youth health, and open discussions where students were encouraged to interact
directly with facilitators. The awareness talk served as the foundation of the programme by providing
factual information related to reproductive health and personal well-being. Students
were introduced to important concepts regarding responsible decision-making and
healthy living practices. The educational sharing sessions created opportunities for
facilitators to provide practical knowledge that students could apply in their daily lives. These sessions focused on helping participants understand how lifestyle choices
directly impact long-term health outcomes.
Interactive discussions became one of the most valuable components of the
programme. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions openly, discuss
concerns, and participate actively rather than remaining passive listeners. An
appreciation session was also held at the end of the programme where certificates
and tokens of recognition were presented as a gesture of gratitude for participation
and collaboration. The programme generated several positive outcomes for participating
students. One of the most noticeable impacts was the increased awareness and
understanding of important health-related issues. Students demonstrated improved
knowledge regarding reproductive health, responsible personal behavior, and healthy
lifestyle practices. Beyond knowledge acquisition, the programme also created a comfortable
environment for discussing topics that students often feel hesitant to address openly. The facilitators successfully encouraged honest communication, allowing participants
to engage in conversations without fear of judgment. Another important outcome was
the development of students’ soft skills. Throughout discussions and interactive
sessions, students improved their communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and
confidence when expressing ideas or asking questions.
Institutionally, the programme strengthened the partnership between Goon
International College and LPPKN. Such collaboration demonstrates how educational
institutions and government agencies can work together effectively to create
programmes that produce meaningful social impact. The high student participation
rate further confirmed that the programme addressed real concerns among young
adults and fulfilled an important educational need. The My Body, My Choice programme contributes significantly toward several
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First, it supports SDG 3:
Good Health and Well-being by promoting awareness regarding reproductive health
and encouraging healthier lifestyle choices among students. Secondly, the programme aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education because it
provides students with practical life skills education that extends beyond classroom
learning. The knowledge gained helps students make informed decisions that can
positively affect their future. The programme also contributes to SDG 5: Gender
Equality by promoting respect for personal boundaries, individual rights, and
awareness regarding consent and responsible behavior. Finally, SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals is reflected through the
successful collaboration between Goon International College and LPPKN, demonstrating how institutional partnerships can create stronger educational and
social outcomes. Through these contributions, the programme supports long-term
efforts toward building healthier, more informed, and socially responsible
communities. Although the programme was successfully conducted, several challenges
were identified during implementation. One challenge involved maintaining
continuous student engagement throughout the full-day programme. Since the
sessions covered serious topics over an extended period, facilitators needed to
ensure students remained focused and actively involved. Time management also
became an important consideration, as balancing educational content with interactive
activities required careful coordination. Facilitators needed to allocate sufficient time
for discussions while ensuring all planned content was delivered effectively. Based on these observations, several recommendations can be made for
future programmes. Similar awareness programmes should be conducted regularly
to reinforce knowledge and maintain student awareness over time. Participation
should also be expanded to involve students from additional colleges and institutions. Future programmes could incorporate more workshops and practical
seminars, allowing students to experience more hands-on learning rather than relying
primarily on lecture-based sessions. Strengthening long-term collaboration between
educational institutions and public health agencies will also ensure sustainability and
allow greater impact in future community development initiatives.
In conclusion, the My Body, My Choice programme was a highly successful
initiative that achieved its objectives of promoting health awareness, encouraging
responsible decision-making, and educating students on personal well-being. The
programme provided students with valuable knowledge that can positively influence
their future choices and overall lifestyle. The collaboration between LPPKN and Goon International College
demonstrated how partnerships between educational institutions and government
agencies can create meaningful programmes that extend beyond traditional
classroom education. The success of the programme was clearly reflected through
strong student participation, active engagement during sessions, and the positive
learning outcomes achieved. Most importantly, the programme reminded students
that making responsible choices regarding their health and personal well-being is
essential for long-term success and quality of life. Through continued awareness efforts and future collaborative programmes,
institutions can continue empowering young adults to become informed, responsible, and socially conscious members of society. Overall, this programme served as an
important step toward creating a healthier student community while contributing to
long-term educational and social development.
